The rules state: "While a character's basic Attributes (Speed and Power) have no restriction on their modification, each of a character's specific abilities (Damage, To Hit, Resistance, Movement, and Defense) may only be increased by one Event card in any given combat."
Does that mean I can only play a single event that affects abilities, or can I play more than one card as long as each ability is only affected by a single card?
For example, 'Concentrated Fire' give +2 damage, with an additional +1 if used with a Smart Gun. Meanwhile 'Good Shot' gives +1 to Hit, as well as an additional +1 to Hit if Marskman or Veteran. Could both cards be played on the same attack to get the bonuses to Hit and Damage?

Re-reading it now, it says "Each of a characters specific abilities..." so I assume I could play as many cards as I like so long as each specific ability is only affected once overall, be it once each by a different card, or all affected by a single card etc. Have I interpreted that correctly?

Yeah, only 1 modifier from events applies to each ability at a time - it doesn't stop you from playing more, they just don't stack.

The rules state: "While a character's basic Attributes (Speed and Power) have no restriction on their modification, each of a character's specific abilities (Damage, To Hit, Resistance, Movement, and Defense) may only be increased by one Event card in any given combat." Does that mean I can only play a single event that affects abilities, or can I play more than one card as long as each ability is only affected by a single card? For example, 'Concentrated Fire' give +2 damage, with an additional +1 if used with a Smart Gun. Meanwhile 'Good Shot' gives +1 to Hit, as well as an additional +1 to Hit if Marskman or Veteran. Could both cards be played on the same attack to get the bonuses to Hit and Damage? You have it right. Concentrated Fire increases damage and Good Shot increases the character's To Hit. To Hit, Damage (ranged or close combat), Movement, Defense, and Resistance are all abilities that a character can receive and benefit from one bonus increase at a time for any of those abilities at a time. Meaning you can increase a character's To Hit, Damage, Movement, Defense and Resistance all at the same time. However you can not increase the same ability with more than 1 card as they are non-cumulative. E.G. Such as playing Good Shot and Adrenaline Rush onto the same character in the same round. The pluses for To Hit will not combine. So if a character has both Good Shot and Adrenaline Rush played on them can only benefit from one event or the other and the effects are non-cumulative. The player has to decide if their character will receive the bonus for the To Hit for either Good Shot -or- Adrenaline Rush, but NOT both. The same goes for playing the same exact card twice on a character. E.G. you play 2 Good Shots on a character, they still only get a maximum of plus 2 to hit if they are Marksman, both Good Shots' bonuses do not combine and add up. Any subsequent event card that modifies the character's other abilities (Defense, Resistance, Movement, etc.) can also be played on that same character in the same round with no issues as long as all conditions and requirements are met. So yes, just like Axlotl had said earlier, they don't stack together. In general, these events last until the end of the Round or phase as some prefer to call it. So if you had 2 Good Shots, you could use one earlier such as for an Overwatch attack during movement Round, and then use another Good Shot later in Combat Round or if you have another event that will provide you a free attack such as Rapid Fire.
