As bad as AVP1 was, it made money. AVP:R is struggle to try and match AVP1. that really says something about the quality, no?

AVP got the money because it was, simply, AVP. Plus the PG-13 thing probably brought in more money, even though it killed the franchise (well, the script and acting helped). Everybody went into AVP2 expecting it would suck. Saw it today. If it was some generic alien bugs and a generic alien "cleaner" (a serious version of Critters, I guess), it would have been a decent horror/action flick. Not great, but not bad. But with the A/P mythos and the suckage of the previous film, it just drove people away. The biggest problem of the film, that if did not exist would greatly, GREATLY improve it? Pretty White Kids With Problems: youtube.com/watch?v=zhjbDDlr-rA. They even the token black guy (who, as trope demands for horror movies, is the first of the "teenagers" to get killed, with another trope being the sluttiest woman getting killed, too, love interest be damned). Imagine if they were removed completely from the film (except as victims) and Ed and Kelley were the main characters. That would have been so much better. Humans: How could someone named "Dallas" not die in an Alien movie? Hated the PWKWPs. I doubt the military would NUKE a city based off of limited footage of something attacking a small Nat'l Guard unit. Hell, even if knew what was happening, what about conventional weapons? You know, without all the nasty fallout (both nuclear and political). Also, Ed's death was so anti-climatic. Ugh. Also, the special alien team from Pred 2 was missing. At least they tried to not mess with continuum by destroying everything (which, to be fair, happens in every single A/P movie but A3). Aliens: No real problems for me, here. Nasty, nasty critters. Liked the suits over the CGG. Predalien did not look ridiculous, and was as it should have been - a bigger Alien. The whole new cycle of reproduction was barely in the movie, you could have cut out the "sloppy kiss" and multiple CB scenes and no one would have been the wiser. Add new things if they are cool and important - what would have been wrong with just a bunch of facehuggers from the Pred ship or a young queen being born, hiving up the hospital, with the Predalien as the primary guard? Also, final helicopter scene, mowed down left and right by a pair of ill-equipped humans when they butchered a heavily armed military unit earlier on. Ugh. Other than those, Aliens were good. Predator: While it was interesting to actually follow the Predator around instead of him being the hidden assassin for most of the movie like in the rest of the films, it just made him look clumsy and careless. Infrequent use of his cloak, reckless attitude. A human getting the drop on him? Not the Predator I know. Besides, he should have been cloaked in that early scene with the police guy. While it makes sense that he is destroying Predtech, why does he care so much about alien remains and their victims that he puts himself at risk to destroy them? He seems less experienced then the Preds from the Pred movies,a s things keep getting the drop on him (both Alien and human). Early scenes in the movie were great. Silly that the Pred took down his own ship with a Castor. The sewer fight was great, too. Really, get rid of the PWKWPs and clean up some of the stuff about the Aliens and Preds, and the movie would have good.

first off, nice MAD tv reference. hehe.
I did like how the alien that was shot through the copter window just would not die. It made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. He's pretty well shattered on the ground and still crawling towards them. About the only alien scene i really liked. Most others where passable to bad for me.
Totally agree on the new reproduction, I figured going into the movie that it would be featured heavily, was rather surprised it wasn't.
and belly-bursters where retarded.

Apparently it looked really pathetic. The still alive bit. I like the idea though - AvPGE FTW!

Well, just saw it today. So we all know the story. The cast are unknowns and TV "stars". I wanted to imagine that they could still deliver acting wise, when all it really was just passable among some of the actors, whilst with others it was damned appalling.
There is the typical sub-plots, the problems that the pizza-boy has with the girl he wants, the ex-con trying to get a job, and a mum trying to deal with a daughter who has somewhat rejected her. Boring, boring, boring.
Even when the action hits the screen, most of it is way too fast-paced and quick cut to see anything, so it isn't anything special, at least AvP has some long cuts, like the Predator spinning the alien round into some pillars etc.
Saying that, some of the kills are mildly entertaining, but they're few and far between. My main problems with them are the same that others have brought up, but I thought wouldn't matter; the mass amount of aliens killed with ease, and the alien-pregnancy scenes. The mass amount of aliens killed even I have to admit, was way too biased, they were just cannon fodder barring the Predalien, and even though I must I am somewhat biased to being more a Predator fan, it was way too far. The alien-pregnancy scenes I thought were just completely there for the shock value, they added little to the menace of the Predalien, didn't even look that well done, and just annoyed a lot of fans for pissing about with the franchises.
My first main problem with the film was the dire, dire dialogue. So many bad nods to the other films that just made one cringe, and loads of lines that just weren't needed (Dallas including motherf**kers when referring to the aliens - just sounded over the top), or at other times it just sounded extremely cheesy or just plain dumb ("people are dying - we need guns" - only as bad it it sounds once you've heard it in the film).
My second main problem was the ridiculous scene after the helicopter has crashed. It contains the mother of all bad dialogue - "are the monsters gone now?" It was terrible, as was Dallas' line "I thought I told you not to crash" (insert cheesy grin). Also, the add-on Yutani scene, did nothing to the storyline for me, meant to be cool, but was just meh.
Overall, its pretty bad, and ruined about a year of high expectations. Is it better than the original AvP? I'm not even sure I can honestly say yes to that. AvP (a 1.5 out of 5 in my mind) had loads of problems, mainly bad acting, and messing heavily with the franchises (the Predator's face and vision, the movement of the Alien Queen, etc). AvPR, has both bad acting, and even though doesn't suffer from the exact same problems in AvP, still wrecks the concept of the aliens being very deadly. I think AvPR could have been a lot better had it been shortened a lot more; take out the horrendous helicopter crash scene, remove the overly bad dialogue (removing it all would mean you'd have to rewrite the script), as well as the alien-pregnancy scenes and it would be somewhat ok. Making the Aliens deadlier, and getting better actors, it would definitely be better. But an AvP film set in a city on earth will always suffer from having a bad setting, whereas the setting for AvP is the best kind of setting there ever can be on Earth. As it stands, it is somewhat worse, even with the only major positive; the much needed increase in gore, albeit the film's only thing that it had to advertise on as being better than the first.
1/5

I still don't know what I think. Part of me feels lots of pity for the Brothers but another part of me hates them for making all these promises they knew they couldn't deliver.
